NOAA weather radio with the VU5K module

Post by ke9ns »

Using my 2m/70cm Dual band vertical ant, I am able to listen to local NOAA Weather radio channels (5K FM), using the VU5K module in my Flex-5000.
The VU5K was clearly not designed to receive outside the standard 2m/70cm ham bands.
It receives up to the NOAA weather channels at 162Mhz, but the receiver performance is poor this far from the 2m ham band.
The Receiver appears to work well up to 157mhz
It also receives down to the NOAA weather Satellites at 137mhz (Wide DATA FM), but (again) the receiver performance is poor this far from the 2m band.
Make sure to turn the Preamp ON.

Click on the "SWL Search" menu item (top line of PowerSDR) to see a list of know frequencies between 137mhz and 162mhz
And Right click on the VFOA BandText to toggle BandText in the Panadapter window (ON/OFF)
